Dissertation or Thesis Margin requirements: How to set margins in Microsoft Word

Incorrect dissertation margins can create avoidable problems during submission. Even when your research and writing are complete, your manuscript may need formatting corrections if its page layout does not meet your university's requirements.

The first step is to confirm the required measurements. The second is to apply them consistently throughout your thesis or dissertation.

What are the standard Dissertation or Thesis Margin requirements?

A common configuration is one-inch margins on all four sides. Some universities require a wider left margin, often 1.5 inches, to accommodate binding. Others specify different measurements for particular pages or document elements.

These are conventions, not universal rules. Your graduate school's official dissertation guidelines determine which measurements you should use. Do not assume Microsoft Word's default settings meet your institution's requirements.

How to check your University's requirements

Before changing your document:

  • Find your university's official dissertation or thesis formatting guidelines.

  • Locate the section covering page layout or margins.

  • Record the required measurements for the top, bottom, left, and right margins.

  • Check whether the guidelines specify different requirements for landscape pages or preliminary pages.

  • If the instructions are unclear, contact your graduate school for confirmation.

Set the margins before completing detailed formatting whenever possible. Changing them late in the process can shift page breaks and affect the table of contents and page numbering.

How to set Dissertation or Thesis margins in Microsoft Word

Once you know the required measurements, follow these steps:

  • Open your dissertation in Microsoft Word.

  • Select the Layout tab.

  • Click Margins, then select Custom Margins.

  • Enter the required measurements for the top, bottom, left, and right margins.

  • Under Apply to, select Whole document if the same settings should apply throughout.

  • Click OK.

Reopen Custom Margins to verify the measurements.

If your dissertation contains multiple sections, check the settings in each section. Applying margins to the whole document can override intentional differences, so confirm your institution's requirements before standardizing them.

How to fix inconsistent Margins

Margins can differ unexpectedly when a document contains section breaks or content copied from other Word files.

To investigate, click inside a page with unusual margins and open Layout → Margins → Custom Margins. Check the measurements for that section, then compare them with other parts of the document.

If the settings are inconsistent, correct the affected sections according to your university's requirements. Review the pages afterward because changing margins can alter pagination, move headings, and affect the placement of tables and figures.

What about Landscape Pages, Tables, and Figures?

Wide tables and figures sometimes require landscape orientation. In Word, you can select the content, open Layout → Page Setup, change the orientation to Landscape, and apply the change to the selected text. Word can insert the section breaks needed to isolate that content.

Check the resulting page layout against your institution's rules, particularly any requirements for the binding edge, page numbers, and margins on landscape pages.

Tables and figures should also fit within the permitted page area. Where necessary, adjust their size or use landscape orientation if your guidelines allow it.

Remember that block quotations, footnotes, and table contents may have their own indentation or layout requirements. These are separate from the page margins themselves.

Check Your Dissertation or Thesis formatting before submission

Before submitting, confirm that:

  • All four margins match your university's specifications.

  • Section breaks have not introduced unintended differences.

  • Landscape pages meet the required layout rules.

  • Tables and figures fit within the permitted page area.

  • Page numbers, headings, and the table of contents remain correctly positioned.
