Request a ReviewPhD in Canada: funding, candidacy and the thesis defense
A Canadian PhD sits between the American and British models. You usually take some coursework, pass a comprehensive or candidacy exam, defend a thesis proposal, write the thesis, and then defend it orally before a committee that includes an examiner from outside your university. Most programs run four to five years, and most arrive with a funding package attached.
The document at the center of this degree is called a thesis in most of the English-speaking world and a dissertation in the United States. This guide uses "thesis" and treats the two words as the same piece of work, so everything here applies to your dissertation too.
Admission
Many Canadian PhD programs expect a master's degree, although some admit strong applicants directly from a bachelor's degree or let master's students transfer into the doctoral program. Admission in research-based programs depends heavily on finding a supervisor. A professor who wants to work with you can secure your funding and support your application, so contact potential supervisors before you apply and read their recent publications first.
Applications usually include transcripts, a statement of purpose or research statement, a CV, and academic references. International applicants whose first language is not English or French need to show language proficiency, and universities publish their own minimum scores.
Funding
Funding varies by university, department and field, so ask about it before you accept any offer. Many universities give doctoral students a minimum package that combines a stipend, teaching or research assistantships and entrance scholarships. Some waive or reduce the international tuition differential for funded doctoral students. Always ask whether the package is guaranteed and for how many years.
Federal doctoral awards have been restructured recently, and the programs that once admitted international students have changed. Check the current funder pages for CIHR, NSERC and SSHRC, and confirm eligibility for non-citizens before you count on any national award. Provincial and institutional awards add further options.
The stages of the degree
- Coursework. Often one to two years in the social sciences and humanities, and lighter in lab sciences.
- Comprehensive or candidacy exam. A written exam, an oral exam or both, testing your command of the field. Passing makes you a PhD candidate. The format differs sharply between universities and even departments.
- Thesis proposal. A document and often an oral presentation to your supervisory committee. It sets your question, method and timeline.
- Ethics approval. Required before you collect data from participants.
- Research and writing. Regular committee meetings keep the work on schedule.
- Thesis submission and defense.
The proposal stage tests what you can defend. The method for writing a research gap and the questions in proposal defense questions and how to prepare apply directly.
The thesis
A Canadian thesis can follow a monograph structure of introduction, literature review, methodology, findings, discussion and conclusion. Many universities also allow an article-based format, with several papers linked by framing chapters, in some programs called a manuscript-based thesis. Length limits and rules for co-authored papers vary by university, so read your faculty's thesis guidelines early.
The defense
The oral defense is a formal examination, usually public or semi-public. The committee typically includes your supervisor, other members of your department, and an external examiner from another university. A chair, who does not examine you, runs the session. You present your work briefly, and the examiners then question you in rounds. Afterward the committee deliberates in private and announces the result.
Common outcomes are pass as submitted, pass with minor corrections, pass with major revisions subject to approval, or a request to revise and resubmit. Most candidates pass with some corrections, which you then complete under your supervisor's direction. If this happens to you, read what pass with revisions means. For preparation, 12 common defense questions and the slide templates give you a working base.
After the PhD
International graduates should look into the post-graduation work options on the federal immigration site, because the rules change and affect career planning.
Writing support
Canadian examiners read every chapter closely, and external examiners come to the thesis with no loyalty to you. A clean draft helps them engage with the argument instead of the prose. TDM provides thesis and dissertation editing, structured chapter review and formatting to your university's thesis template.
