Request a ReviewPhD thesis in Europe in English: the Netherlands, Germany and the Nordic countries
A doctorate in continental Europe often works as a job. In the Netherlands and the Nordic countries, you typically apply for an advertised position, receive a salary, and finish a thesis in about four years. Germany offers both employment and independent routes. Much of the research is conducted in English even where the national language differs, though daily life and some administration will use the local one.
The document at the center of this degree is called a thesis in most of the English-speaking world and a dissertation in the United States. This guide uses "thesis" and treats the two words as the same piece of work, so everything here applies to your dissertation too.
The position model
The most important difference from the UK, US and Canada is how you apply. Instead of applying to a degree program with a proposal of your own, you often answer a job advertisement for a project already funded by a grant. The supervisor has defined the topic and the research team, and you are hired to carry it out and shape it. You write a cover letter, send your CV and references, and may interview by video.
This means your application should address the project in the advertisement. A general statement about your interests fits poorly. Show that your training matches what the project needs, and say what you would contribute.
The Netherlands
Dutch PhD candidates are typically employed by the university for four years and paid a salary with social benefits. Teaching duties are limited in many contracts. The dissertation is either a monograph or a collection of published or publishable papers with an introduction and conclusion. When the supervisors approve the manuscript, a reading committee assesses it. Only if the committee approves does a public defense take place.
The defense is a formal ceremony of about an hour, held in a university hall. The committee members question the candidate in turn, and the candidate is usually accompanied by two assistants called paranymphs. The degree is awarded at the end of the ceremony, and the committee's approval of the manuscript beforehand makes failure at the defense very unusual. Because the assessment happens before the ceremony, the manuscript carries the weight.
Germany
Germany offers several routes. Some candidates hold a position at a university chair or research institute and work on a doctorate alongside their duties. Others join structured doctoral programs or graduate schools, and some work independently under a Doktorvater or Doktormutter and apply for scholarships. The rules differ by university, faculty and discipline, so read the doctoral regulations, the Promotionsordnung, of the faculty you apply to.
The dissertation is assessed by at least two reviewers, and an oral examination or public defense follows. German doctoral degrees from different faculties may have different formal steps, including a required publication of the dissertation. Confirm those steps before you commit.
The Nordic countries
Sweden, Finland, Denmark and Norway hire doctoral candidates as employees or give them stipends, and the programs are usually four years. Sweden and Finland share a public defense tradition in which an external expert called the opponent examines the thesis before an audience. The opponent summarizes the work, then questions you on it, and a grading committee decides the outcome. The thesis is often a compilation of articles with an introductory summary, and in some disciplines a monograph.
The Danish PhD involves an assessment committee that reads the thesis, followed by a public defense. Norwegian candidates also defend publicly, after the committee assesses the thesis. Terms and rules differ among universities, so rely on the institution's own pages.
Language, life and visas
Many programs state that English is the working language of the research group. Check whether coursework, administration and the defense itself will be in English. Non-EU applicants need a residence permit linked to employment or study, and the university's international office normally guides you through it. Salaries and cost of living vary between countries and cities, so compare a funded offer against realistic expenses.
Preparing the manuscript
A paper-based thesis requires consistent style across papers written at different times, with a unifying introduction that argues why they belong together. TDM's editing helps with consistency, and our journal manuscript service supports the papers that go into your thesis. For preparing a defense wherever it is held, see the 12 common defense questions, our guide to defense slides, and the guide to European defenses.
