PhD in Ireland: the structured PhD, the thesis and the viva

Ireland teaches its doctorates in English and examines them in the British tradition. You write a thesis, then defend it in a viva before an internal and an external examiner. Irish universities have also built a structured PhD model that adds taught modules and transferable skills training to the research, and many programs run for four years.

The document at the center of this degree is called a thesis in most of the English-speaking world and a dissertation in the United States. This guide uses "thesis" and treats the two words as the same piece of work, so everything here applies to your dissertation too.

Why students look at Ireland

Irish universities attract international doctoral candidates who want an English-language degree in the European Union with a supervisor-led model. The degrees carry recognition across Europe, and the country's research funding bodies support doctoral work in many disciplines. Details differ by university, so read each institution's graduate studies pages instead of treating Ireland as one system.

Applying

An application normally includes a research proposal, transcripts, references and evidence of English proficiency for non-native speakers. Many applicants find their supervisor first and then apply through the university's graduate admissions office. Some programs advertise funded projects tied to a supervisor's grant, and others expect you to bring your own topic and funding. Read the advert closely, because the two routes lead to different proposals.

See how to write a PhD research proposal for international applications for what to put in the proposal itself.

Funding

Funding comes from a mix of national research agencies, university scholarships, project grants and external sponsors. Agency awards and university scholarships are competitive, with deadlines that often fall months before the academic year begins. Check eligibility for non-EU applicants in each call, because rules about fees and stipends differ between schemes. Ask your prospective supervisor early what funding exists and how to apply for it.

Stages of the degree

  1. First year. You refine the proposal, begin the literature review, and may take structured modules.
  2. Progression review. Most Irish universities review doctoral progress about a year in, through a written report and a panel meeting. Passing confirms your PhD registration, while an unsuccessful review may lead to a second attempt or a move to a master's degree.
  3. Ethics approval if you work with human participants.
  4. Research and writing across the middle years.
  5. Thesis submission and viva.

The thesis

The format depends on your discipline and university. Many social science and humanities theses are monographs of 80,000 words or so, and some universities set limits in the same range. Others allow a thesis by publication. Check the regulations published by your university's graduate school.

The viva

The viva is an oral examination with an internal examiner from your university and an external examiner from another institution, often outside Ireland. A chair may be present to run the procedure. You respond to questions about the thesis, its argument, its method and its contribution. The examiners decide on an outcome, which typically falls into the familiar categories: pass, pass with minor corrections, pass with major corrections, resubmit, or a lower award.

If corrections are required, you complete them against a deadline and return the revised thesis for approval. The method in how to respond to committee comments gives you a clear structure for the response table. Preparation for the viva is covered in the 12 common defense questions.

Visa and practicalities

Non-EU students need immigration permission to study. Irish universities explain the process once you accept an offer. English proficiency evidence is required for non-native speakers, and universities publish their accepted tests and scores. Confirm both with the university and the Irish immigration authority before you pay any deposit.

Support with the thesis

External examiners read a thesis without ever having seen your drafts. Careful editing and formatting to your university's regulations let them concentrate on your research. TDM works from your draft and keeps authorship with you.
