PhD Thesis in Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, UAE and Turkey

Doctoral study in these four countries follows a pattern of coursework, a comprehensive or qualifying stage, a thesis and a defense, but each system sets its own entry rules and its own language requirements. This guide describes the common structure and flags where you must read the university's regulations. Rules change, and national ministries and universities publish the current versions.

A doctoral candidate in any of the four countries normally holds a master's degree, completes some taught coursework, passes an examination that shows command of the field, writes a thesis under a supervisor and defends it before a committee. The thesis is a monograph or, in some faculties, a set of published articles. The language of instruction may be Arabic, Turkish or English depending on the university and the field, and that single fact shapes the whole degree.

Saudi Arabia

Saudi universities such as King Saud University, King Abdulaziz University, KFUPM and KAUST offer doctoral programs, with English as the language of instruction in science, engineering and medicine and Arabic in much of the humanities and Islamic studies. Kuwait

Kuwait University is the main public provider, and the country also has private universities. Kuwaiti students pursue doctorates abroad in large numbers, supported by government scholarship arrangements and the country's cultural office network. If you plan to study at home, confirm which programs are open, whether the degree you want is offered, and the language of supervision.

The United Arab Emirates

UAE University, Khalifa University, the Mohamed bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence and other institutions offer doctoral degrees. UAE University publishes scholarship announcements for Emirati PhD candidates in priority research areas, and these have required that the dissertation fall within a sponsor's priority sectors and that the applicant meet the university's admission requirements. The federal Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research also funds Emirati students to study abroad, which the government updated its rules for in 2026, according to press reports. Turkey

Turkish doctoral programs admit candidates who hold a master's degree, and in some fields strong bachelor's graduates. Applications involve a graduate entrance test score, a foreign language exam score and interviews, and each university sets its own thresholds within national rules. The doctoral path includes coursework, a qualifying examination, a thesis proposal presented to a thesis monitoring committee, periodic progress meetings and a thesis defense before a jury. Turkey also sends its own graduates abroad. What to check at any university
