Request a ReviewPhD thesis in the UAE: admission, funding, scholarships and the defense
The United Arab Emirates teaches its doctorates in English at its research universities, funds many full-time candidates, and sponsors Emirati students who study abroad. The structure follows the American model of coursework, a qualifying stage and a dissertation, with local rules and priorities added. Figures below come from university pages and government announcements, and each one can change before your intake, so check the source before you act.
The research document is a thesis in most countries and a dissertation in the United States, and UAE university documents use both words. This guide treats them as the same work.
Doctoral study in the UAE
United Arab Emirates University
UAEU runs a single PhD program. Its published requirements include:
- A master's degree from an accredited university recognized by the UAE Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research, with a cumulative GPA of at least 3.3 on a 4.0 scale. Colleges may set higher standards, and some listings show 3.5.
- English proof. The graduate admissions page asks for IELTS 6.0 or the equivalent for disciplines delivered predominantly in English, and 6.5 where English is the main language of instruction or the dissertation is written in English. Some program pages state 6.5 with a two-year validity.
- A review of every application recommended by a department by the Doctoral Studies Committee before admission begins.
The program policy lists the supporting documents as an academic record, a language score for non-native speakers, referee reports and a dissertation proposal. A comprehensive exam and a dissertation defense follow coursework. In physics, for example, the program requires 24 credit hours of coursework and 30 of thesis research, then a comprehensive exam and a defense of the findings. Candidates advance to candidacy only after satisfactory qualifying examinations and the host department's recommendation to the board.
UAEU has also announced full-time PhD scholarships for all nationalities in priority sectors, including renewable energy, transportation, education, health, water, technology and space. Those listings describe a full tuition waiver, a monthly stipend and health insurance, with the condition that your dissertation falls in a priority sector. It also announces scholarships for Emirati students sponsored by the Ministry of Education in listed research areas. Read the current call for its conditions and deadlines.
Khalifa University
Khalifa University considers applicants for its merit-based PhD scholarships during admission, and the applicant ticks an interest in scholarship consideration in the admission application, without filing a separate form. The standard PhD scholarship carries a tuition waiver and a stipend, and the program is full-time. UAE nationals can enter through a combined master's and PhD scholarship, which has its own grade requirements. Khalifa also runs a joint PhD scholarship with the China Scholarship Council for Chinese citizens.
Mohamed bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence
MBZUAI offers graduate degrees in artificial intelligence and related fields. Its funding model covers tuition, a monthly stipend, health insurance and a university-sponsored UAE residence visa for funded students. The stipend published for PhD students is AED 17,500 a month for international students and AED 43,500 for UAE nationals. Applicants sit a screening exam that tests foundational knowledge in the chosen program.
Other universities
Abu Dhabi University, Ajman University, the American University in Dubai and others offer doctoral programs, and some are self-funded. Tuition varies widely, and the UAE has no standard fee cap, so compare the funded offers against the self-funded ones before you commit. Check the university's accreditation with the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research.
Emirati students who study abroad
The Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research sponsors qualified Emirati citizens for master's and doctoral degrees at universities abroad. The published conditions include:
- Approved list. You must obtain academic admission in a major on the Ministry's approved list of universities and majors, which it bases on global rankings.
- No earlier sponsorship for the same or a lower degree, whether the Ministry, another body or you paid for it, and no previously revoked scholarship.
- Windows. The Ministry announces application windows each semester. The window for the Spring 2026 semester closed on 7 November 2025.
- Scale. The Ministry reported 592 sponsored students at more than 115 institutions in 22 countries, as of that announcement.
- New rules. Cabinet Decision No. 93 of 2026 replaced a financial framework in place since 2015, and Ministerial Resolution No. 179 of 2026, issued in August 2026, sets the conditions and procedures for Emirati scholarships. Read the current text on the Ministry's site, because it replaces earlier conditions you may have seen elsewhere.
Your admission to the foreign university is a separate application, and the Ministry needs your offer. Read how Gulf and Turkish students apply for a PhD in the US or UK, then the US and UK guides. How to write a PhD research proposal for international applications covers the proposal. For a wider view, see PhD systems compared.
Before you apply, check
- The master's grade and English score for your university and college.
- Whether a scholarship ties your topic to a national priority sector.
- Whether your funding covers the whole program or the first year only.
- If you are Emirati, whether your major and university are on the Ministry's approved list before you accept an offer.
Writing the thesis or dissertation
Candidates at UAE universities and Emirati students abroad often write in English as an additional language, and examiners judge the clarity of the writing alongside the research. TDM's editing corrects the sentences and leaves the argument yours. Our formatting service brings the document into your university's template, and the 12 common defense questions prepare you for the examination.
